Returns the ranking of the application in the category chart
The Google Play Store and the App Store both organize their apps in different categories which users can browse in the form of lists. The position of an app within each list is what we call its "category ranking". Category rankings are exposed through two endpoints:
- The Current endpoint which returns the latest - most recent - data available
- The History endpoint which returns the historical daily values over a given period of time

How do I get an app's rank in its App Store or Google Play category via API?
You can pull an app's category rank with AppTweak's App Category Ranking endpoint, which returns the app's current position in its own category chart and in the overall "All" chart. Pass the app's apps ID, a country, and a device (iphone, ipad, or android); the response gives the value (rank), category_name, and chart_type for each chart the app appears on. Use the History endpoint instead to fetch rank for a date range with start_date/end_date.
What's the difference between an app's category rank and its overall chart rank?
Category rank and overall rank are two rows in the same response, distinguished by the category field. AppTweak's App Category Ranking endpoint returns one entry with the app's specific category (for example category_name: "Education") and a separate entry where category is "0" (iOS) or "ALL" (Android) and category_name is "All" — the app's position across every category on that chart. Both share the same chart_type and date.
Can I fetch category ranking for both free and paid app charts in one call?
Yes — the App Category Ranking endpoint returns free, paid, and grossing chart types in the same response, one entry per chart_type for each category tracked. There's no separate parameter to pick a chart type: the endpoint always returns all chart types it has data for, and you filter client-side on the chart_type field (free, paid, or grossing).
Why is an app's category rank sometimes returned as null?
A null value means the app wasn't found on that specific chart on that date — most often the paid chart, since a free app has no paid-chart position, but it can also happen when the app fell outside the fetch_depth AppTweak tracks for that chart_type and category. When this happens, category and category_name are also returned as null for that entry, so treat a null block as "not ranked there" rather than a data gap.
How far back can I pull historical category ranking for an app store app?
You can fetch daily category rank history for any date range with AppTweak's App Category Ranking - History endpoint, using start_date and end_date (format YYYY-MM-DD, default is the last 30 days). Each daily entry includes rank, category, category_name, and chart_type for both the app's own category and the "All" chart, so a competitor's rank trend or your own app's rank trend over time comes back in a single call. AppTweak's category rank history goes back to 2014, so long-range trend requests aren't limited to recent data.
