New AppTweak Volume Estimate since August 11, 2026

Since August 11, 2026, we are improving how keyword volume is reported across AppTweak, including the API.

What's changing

  • volume will return the AppTweak Volume Estimate. This is AppTweak's own estimate of keyword search demand, built from years of real volume history and additional market signals. It restores representative volumes for the many keywords the App Store now reports at the lowest tier (volume 5), so genuinely low-demand keywords and high-potential ones no longer look the same. The field name, format, and scale (5–100) are unchanged — only the values improve.
  • New metric: search_popularity. Returns the App Store's raw, store-reported Search Popularity score — the values volume returned before this change. Add it to your metrics parameter if you want to keep working with the store's raw data alongside the new estimate.
  • max_reach and installs improve too. These estimates are calculated from volume, so keywords previously stuck at 0 will show meaningful values again from August 11. This reflects improved data, not a change in app performance.

What's not changing

No endpoints, parameters, or response formats are modified. max_volume continues to return the highest store-reported Search Popularity score.

Historical data is not rewritten. The AppTweak Volume Estimate applies from August 12 onward, so history requests will show a step change on that date. There is no retroactive Volume Estimate history before August 11.

What you should do

  • If you use volume for keyword prioritization, no action is needed — you'll automatically get more representative values.
  • If your integration depends on the store's raw values, request the new search_popularity metric from August 11.

Keyword metrics are numerical properties that AppTweak has been able to gather or estimate about keywords. Metrics are exposed through two endpoints:

This endpoint returns the data for today. If AppTweak hasn't stored the data, the data will be fetched live on the store.

This endpoint returns the data from AppTweak's databases. If the data is not available, you'll get a "null" response and you won't get charged credits for the datapoints.

A score between 5 and 100 that shows how popular a keyword is in terms of searches. The higher the number, the more popular the keyword is.

On iOS, this represents the total number of apps considered by Apple before applying their sorting algorithm. A bigger number means that more apps "match" the keyword.

On Android, this is the total number of apps that AppTweak was able to fetch when making the search for a keyword.

FAQs

How do I fetch historical app store keyword search volume via API?

You can pull a dated series of search volume for any app store keyword with AppTweak's Keyword Metrics - History endpoint (GET /keywords/metrics/history.json), passing up to 5 keywords, the volume metric, a country and device, and a start_date/end_date range. The response returns one value per day per keyword, so you can chart demand trends or feed a pipeline without re-querying current data daily. Only volume, max_reach, and results are available on the history endpoint — difficulty, brand, and max_volume are current-only.

What's the difference between Keyword Metrics - Current and Keyword Metrics - History?

The difference is which point in time each endpoint returns: Current gives today's snapshot, History gives a dated series over a range you set. AppTweak's Keyword Metrics - Current endpoint (GET /keywords/metrics/current.json) returns the latest value for each requested metric, fetching live from the store if AppTweak hasn't stored it yet that day. History (GET /keywords/metrics/history.json) returns one value per day for start_date to end_date from AppTweak's stored data, returning null (uncharged) for days with no data rather than fetching live.

How do I compare search volume across multiple app store keywords in one API call?

You can request several keywords in a single call to AppTweak's Keyword Metrics endpoints by passing a comma-separated list in the keywords parameter — up to 10 keywords on Current, up to 5 on History. Each keyword comes back as its own key in the response object, with the requested metrics nested underneath, so you can line up volume, difficulty, or results for several keywords side by side from one request instead of calling the endpoint once per keyword.

Is there an API for checking how competitive an app store keyword is to rank for?

Yes — AppTweak's Keyword Metrics endpoint returns a difficulty score for this. Difficulty is a 1–100 value where a higher number means stronger apps already occupy the top 10 search results for that keyword, making it harder to break in. It's returned by the Current endpoint only (no historical series) alongside volume, results, and brand, so you can screen a keyword list for both demand and competition before prioritizing which ones to target.

What does the brand field mean in an app store keyword metrics response?

The brand field flags whether a keyword is tied to a specific app rather than being generic. AppTweak's Keyword Metrics endpoint returns brand as an object containing the top app's id, title, and icon when a keyword is considered branded (for example, a competitor's app name); an empty object means the keyword is treated as generic. On Android, the object also includes a share_of_brand field alongside the top app details. This is useful for filtering branded terms out of a generic keyword research list.
